School Meals
The Mayor of London provides grant funding for the 2025/26 school year to pay for free school meals for key stage 2 pupils at state schools who do not qualify for Government-funded income-related free school meals.
This means that all primary school children who attend state schools in London will receive free school meals for the full academic year of 2025/26. The funding will help up to 270,000 primary school children in London access free school meals and could save your family upwards of £440 across the year.
Your child will receive their free school meals automatically, but it’s vitally important that you still complete your borough’s registration form if you believe you are eligible for extra benefits-related funding for their school from the Government, worth £1,300 per year. See eligibility criteria below. That’s extra money to spend on enrichment activities, teacher development, and targeted support for the children that need it most. Depending on how schemes operate in your borough, it may also entitle you to other benefits like food vouchers during the holidays and discounts on residential trips. There is more information about registration in your borough here:
Universal Credit, Pupil premium and benefit-related free school meals (change from September 2026 onwards)
The eligibility criteria for benefit-related Free School Meals (FSM) will change from September 2026.
Under new national rules, all families receiving Universal Credit will qualify for benefit-related Free School Meals from September 2026. But, you must complete the form linked below to receive this as all children must be assessed
under the new criteria before the start of the new academic year. So, even if you already qualify and your child is Pupil Premium, you must complete the form to reapply.

Households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings of £7,400 or less
- Pupils will qualify for benefit-related Free School Meals
- Enable our school to receive Pupil Premium funding
- Be considered for other support, such as extended school travel assistance
It is really important to us that you re-register for benefit-related free school meals otherwise the school will no longer receive the additional Pupil Premium funding that is so vital to us. Pupil Premium funding provides extra money to spend on enrichment activities, teacher development, and targeted support for the children that need it most. Parents are encouraged to apply for benefit-related free meals even if you prefer your child to have a packed lunch, as this will also attract additional funding for the school
Households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings above £7,400
You will also qualify for benefit-related Free School Meals but not Pupil Premium Funding.
Timing
Forms submitted by 17 July 2026 are guaranteed to be processed before the new school year. Applications received after this date will still be assessed, but outcomes may not be available before September 2026.

Parents are encouraged to apply for free meals even if you prefer your child to have a packed lunch, as this attracts valuable additional funding for the school, and you may qualify for other support.
Packed Lunches
Qualifying parents are encouraged to apply for benefit-related free meals even if you prefer your child to have a packed lunch, as this attracts valuable additional funding for the school, and you may qualify for other support.
If your child would prefer to bring a packed lunch please ensure that this contains no nuts as we have children in school with severe allergies and we are a nut-free school. Any drinks sent in should be in a plastic container or carton. No glass or cans of fizzy drink should be brought into school. Please ensure that all lunch boxes are clearly named.
All food in lunch boxes should be eaten at lunch time. In addition, Key Stage 2 children may bring in a fruit snack for morning break. Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children have fruit for morning break provided by the school.
Breaktime Snack
Children in Reception—Year 2 are given free fruit/veg snacks at breaktime as part of the ’School Fruit & Vegetable Scheme’.
Some children like to have a snack at breaktime. Children in Years 3-6 can bring fruit, plain crackers or a (nut free) cereal bar for break time. Please no chocolate, crisps, nuts or cakes. Dried fruit bars/fruit winders are not permitted.
